Top 5 restaurants in the Catskills – Upstate NY

Summer is for the Hamptons, but New York fall and winter are for weekend getaways upstate. From fall foliage hikes to warming up by a wood-burning fireplace, there’s nothing like escaping the city hustle and bustle for a cozy countryside getaway – as long as a hearty meal is involved! Whether you’re spending the holiday season in the Catskills or taking a ski break in NY State’s mountains, make sure to include the best comforting meals at these top restaurants:

5. Fish & Game – Hudson, NY –  Ok I lie. I think Fish & Game is the most overrated restaurant upstate (I make it pretty clear I think) but only when it comes to its food. There’s no question this farm-to-table institution, located in the heart of picturesque Hudson, New York, is still a must-stop for its incredibly charming setting – just stick to drinks (ok and maybe nibbles) at the bar area. The homey, rustic-chic decor and the ridiculously romantic atmosphere will make you want to curl up by the dark wood fireplace with a glass of brandy and snuggle up with your date. Time to pick up your food game Zak Pelaccio!

4. The Bull & Garland – Hobart, NY – is a quaint English Pub and Inn in a historical setting, opened by an English couple who escaped the world city life for the Catskills countryside. The Bull & Garland is great for a relaxing stay at one of their cute guest rooms, but most of all is a great dinner pit stop. The warm rustic atmosphere, the welcoming pub feel, the friendly staff and the hearty food is what The Bull & Garland is all about.

3. Brushland Eating House – Bovina, NY – is one of those destination restaurants in the Catskills derived from the Brooklyn-imported “hickster” trend. Just like its popular neighbor Table on Ten, Brushland Eating House is a farm-to-table eatery in Delaware County, located off the beaten path in one of the cutest and most remote towns in the Catskills, Bovina, about 3 hours north of Manhattan. It’s a warm, welcoming place, where the food served is just as comforting as the atmosphere. True to the Delaware County formula, they also offer lodging. Plan a stop to Brushland Eating House for a cozy, satisfying dinner or enjoy the experience to the fullest on a relaxing weekend getaway.

2. Cucina – Woodstock, NY is probably my favorite Italian restaurant outside of New York City, that has been a culinary staple in upstate NY since its opening in 2006. The restaurant is located on Woodstock’s main street in a restored farmhouse. The beautiful country-chic setting is incredibly welcoming, with a cozy bar area, romantic table seating, and large wooden communal tables, great for a convivial group gathering. Not to mention its beautiful outdoor patio surrounded by greenery. Make sure you sit there for warm weather al fresco dining, or by the indoor fire place for a romantic winter meal and get their delicious signature pasta!

1. Table on Ten – Bloomville, NY  is THE “hickster” spot in the Catskills. This café and inn has become Delaware County’s main attraction, and a popular pit stop for visitors from New York City on an upstate getaway, locals from around the region, and weekenders who own houses in the area – as well as a real hipster hub for people from the art world. The 19th century Italianate house is home to a cozy café and, true to the county’s formula, also offers lodging.  Stay at Table On Ten for a relaxing getaway, or stop by for their delicious home-cooked food, made with amazingly fresh ingredients all sourced from neighboring farms. Table on Ten’s cooking excels in the “less is more”, offering the ultimate farm-to-table experience in its simplest form.
