If you’re a true New Yorker, you’ll most likely avoid the 40s at all coast. A few exceptions apply: the occasional Broadway show, a tour of the UN headquarters, a handful of legit Hell’s Kitchen restaurants, the Intrepid Museum and… heading all the way to the west side highway to board the North River Lobster Company.

North River Lobster Company is a large, three floor floating lobster shack with free river cruises around the New York City. Boarding takes place at Pier 81, on West 41st St, on the Hudson River. The boat is huge, fitting up to 450 people comfortably, spanning on three decks. North River Lobster Co is open seasonally for the summer for an all-day river cruise, with a sailing schedule designed for quick lobster lunches, happy-hour drinks, sunset dinners with incredible views of the Midtown skyline. The schedule rotates between staying docked for about half an hour and cruising out for 45 minutes. There is no fee to get on the boat, and you can stay for however long you want.

The overall atmosphere is very casual and informal. The best is to come here with friends, head to the top deck and share drinks and nibbles on a sunny day (although it’s open rain or shine as they have an indoor area). The sails are included with the cost of food and drinks, which explains why some items are on the pricier side (fair enough) for such a casual fare. Order at the bar, get a number for your table and you will be served when ready.

The menu includes the expected lobster rolls, fresh seafood, light fare, mason jar cocktails, buckets of beer (5 beers for $30) and a raw bar. The food is ok – this is not the place where you’ll be getting the best lobster roll nor cocktail, but then again you’re here for the cruise experience and the view…

North River Lobster Company is a great casual NYC summer outing for a group of friends, an after-work Midtown outing, and a great option for private events or large summer gatherings.
